Tropical Vacation Without Leaving The U.S.: Visit Puerto Rico!

If you’re in the mood for an exotic vacation, but don’t want to worry about needing a passport, or exchanging currency; consider Puerto Rico as your next vacation destination.  Although you will feel as if you are in a totally different country, Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory in 1898. You will find that Spanish is the primary language spoken there of course, the cities are built much like the architecture you see in Mexico, and gas is sold in liters rather than gallons. If you plan to visit Puerto Rico, here is a list of tourist activities and dishes you won’t want to miss during your vacation.

Food
·         Mofongo- One of the country’s most famous dishes, Mofongo consists of a mixture of seasoned mashed plantains, and your personal preference of meat, seafood, or veggies. There is hardly a chance you won’t find this dish on a menu at any restaurant on the island.
·         Asopao- A classic favorite among the people of Puerto Rico, the equivalent to your mother’s chicken soup, Asopao is considered more of a gumbo rather than soup containing a variation of chicken, rice, shellfish, pork, ham, peppers, pigeon peas, olives, tomatoes, and other ingredients.
·         Lechón- This traditional dish in Puerto Rico is a seasoned whole roasted pig. Pork being a favored meat in Puerto Rico, the pig is slow roasted between 6-8 hours on a spit over an open flame. In Guavate, a town located south of San Juan is famous for its weekend pig roasts.

Tourist Sites
·         The Vieques Biobay- One of the most bioluminescent bays in the world, Vieques is best viewed during a moonless night. Once you begin kayaking through the bay you will notice how your oars glow in the green water, and the fish will swim away from you like a streak of underwater lightning. As you dive in for yourself, you will see your own body shimmering in the black light. This experience is one of the most amazing you will experience in Puerto Rico.
·         El Yunque National Forest- Picture yourself diving beneath a natural waterfall, and hiking through a rainforest. El Yunque is the place to be in Puerto Rico. Zip lining is a favored and recommended activity for all thrill seekers who visit. Children as young as 5 can also enjoy this!
·         The Bacardi Rum Visitor Center-The tour will include a tram tour, drink making demos, videos, interactive exhibits, and above all two free tastings.
